π‘ Lighting Basics β What Is a Moving Head?
Moving heads are intelligent lighting fixtures that can pan, tilt, change colors, and project gobos, making them a favorite for DJs and productions looking to add motion and energy to an event.
To truly unlock their potential, DMX control is essential. Running moving heads in standalone or sound-active mode limits their capabilities, while DMX programming allows for precise control, smooth transitions, and seamless integration into your show.
Moving heads are a popular add-on in the wedding and private event market. Theyβre easy to sell as βIntelligent Lightingβ or βMoving Spotlights.β With the rise of battery-powered movers and quick mounting options like Gravity Stands, itβs never been easier to get started with moving heads.
π₯ See Them in Action!
Our very own Dave Gordon recently DJβd a school dance using a full Both Lighting USA setup, all running through our SoundSwitch pre-programmed Diamond 3.2 file β now updated to support the BPM-Spots.
What stood out? The BPM-Spots. These fixtures are 100% battery-powered with wireless DMX, meaning no messy wires to trip over, tape down, or manage. After a 3-hour dance set, the battery was still sitting at three out of four bars.
The halo ring on top added extra visual flair, making the lights not just functional, but part of the dΓ©cor.
Dave surrounded the dance floor with IR-4s, 360 Tubes, and BPMs, creating an immersive experience that made the kids feel like they were inside a nightclub.
π₯ Pro Tip for DJs: Always bring uplights to school dances. Schools are often hesitant to turn off overhead lights unless the room is properly illuminated. With uplights and DMX control, the entire room can change colors throughout the night β a total game changer for school events.
